Alternate Vessel Security Officer (VSO) and Safety Officer. Assists First Mate with the administration of deck crew in terms of orderliness, appearance, and ensures sobriety of all crewmembers. Reports any irregularities to First Mate Responsible for the general safety of all persons on board the vessel.
- Trains newly hired crewmembers in security procedures. May designate the First Mate to assist.
- Acts as Medical Officer of the vessel and is responsible for all First Aid, CPR, etc. to passengers and crew
- Inspects deck department and equipment with relieving Second Mate when coming onboard
- Is thoroughly familiar with all fire fighting, mooring, and navigational equipment including their capabilities and limitations
- Keeps updated on the progressive maintenance of the outer decks and structures
- Helps First Mate schedule work required by the deck crew
- Assists First Mate with vessel inventory, checks all supplies and stores used by navigation department
- Routine conditional inspection all fire fighting and safety equipment
